Funny story
So we were at the Zimfest yesterday. I sat down to breastfeed Mimi and a little girl (my guess would be around 4, maybe 5?) came to us. Chichi (that's the girls name): hey, is this your baby? Me: yes. Chichi: is it a boy or a girl? Me: a girl. Chichi: can I stroke her? Me: sure. (she strokes Mimi with her finger wet with saliva and with popcorn all over it - note to myself: check kids' hands next time I agree they touch Mia ;)). Chichi: why is she doing this to you? (obviously refering to breastfeeding) Me: she is drinking her milk. Chichi: oh. Milk is white, that's what babies drink. Is it why she is so white? Me: no, she is white, because I am white. Chichi: Did you come to the festival? Me: yes. Chichi: but it's for black people? Me:... Chichi: So why is she having one of those? (pointing at my breast) Me: she is having her milk. Chichi: so do you get this milk from home? Me: no, it comes from my breasts Chichi: it comes from your what? Me (thinking it might be too much detail for a kid this age?): from my breasts. Chichi: it comes from your breasts? Me: yes. Chichi: oh, ok. See you later then. This was very bizarre, yet funny and on some level sad experience - it's not the first time I come across a kid who doesn't know babies are breastfed - I wonder if it is an age thing or they just see them being bottle fed all the time? |

It happens sometimes. I learnt to wear something under my t-shirt, so my breast is hardly visible to others, but for example when Tata (Mimi's sister) was here just after Mia was born, she actually looked up close at my breast - it was at the very beginning, so I felt very uncomfortable.
Now I am ok - both with kids asking questions, wanting to touch Mia, etc and with breastfeeding and explaining how it works. I even had to explain to one of my adult friends (who hasn't got kids) how it feels to breastfeed - also at the very beginning, so made me quite uncomfortable too. |
